Questions
Why do I need to have an assessment?
Your Funding Body will
require an Assessment of Need so that your support can be
implemented. An assessment allows you to explore your individual
support needs in relation to your new course. Statistically,
students who have a Needs Assessment and access their support
through DSA, perform academically better than eligible students who
do not access their DSA.
What happens during the assessment?
Your DSA assessment is a
relaxed and informal meeting with an experienced assessor having
specialist experience of your specific learning difficulty or
disability. It is an opportunity to discuss your additional learning
needs in relation to your studies, in a friendly and engaging
environment. During the assessment you will have the chance to
discuss your past experience and learning strategies, whilst looking
at new technology and support strategies. Your assessor will then be
able compile a report of recommended technology and support
strategies, including supplier quotes, once your assessment has been
completed.
What happens after the assessment?
Once the assessment has
been completed you will be sent a copy of the draft report,
outlining the recommended support. Once agreed with you, this will
also be sent to your Funding Body, so that your support can be put
in place. Please watch out for any communication updating you on
your support from either Aim Assessments or your Funding Body.
How soon can I have an assessment carried out?
We aim to
turn around your assessment as quickly as possible, as we know how
frustrating it can be when you're waiting for support to be
implemented.
Depending on availability and your
requirements, we will aim to ensure you have an assessment booked
within 2 working days, assuming that the required information has
been provided to us.
How do I book an assessment?
Simply email our friendly team
via
admin@aimassessments.co.uk
or call 07515 258 754. Please make sure to leave your name and
contact details in any communication. We will offer you an
appointment and send out the relevant information to allow the
assessment to take place.
Where is the assessment centre?
The assessment centre is
located in central Leeds, West Yorkshire, next to the universities'
student accommodation:
Aim Assessments Centre
The
Tannery
91 Kirkstall Road
Leeds
LS3 1HS
Can I bring a companion to the assessment?
Yes, we welcome
you to bring a family member or friend with you, and we provide a
comfortable reception area for them to relax in during your
assessment. Most students prefer to have their assessment on a
one-to-one basis with the assessor, but if the idea of this leaves
you feeling uncomfortable do speak to us.
Will the assessment cost anything to me personally?
No, the
assessment will be funded through the DSA and your Funding Body.
Please inform Aim Assessments of any travel costs you have incurred
in attending, as they may be reimbursable with valid
receipts.
What should I bring to the assessment?
You should ensure
that you bring with you anything that will make you feel more
comfortable during the assessment. You should also think about your
current learning styles and strategies so that the assessor can make
informed decisions with regards to recommendations. You will not
need to bring any equipment or technology that you currently use
during study time, as the assessor will be familiar with all
assistive IT, however if you would like to check please contact our
team prior to your appointment.
Who can I speak to about the assessment or my DSA?
The
Centre Manager Matthew Timmis is happy to answer any questions about
the whole process of accessing support in higher education. You can
contact Matthew on 07515 258 754 or email
matthew.timmis@aimassessments.co.uk
How long does an assessment take?
An assessment usually
takes about two hours, but this can vary depending on the nature of
the support required. Your assessor will be able to give you a more
detailed indication, prior to your appointment.
When will I receive my Report?
Your draft report will be
sent to you no later than five days after your appointment. Once you
have confirmed the report and replied to us it will be sent to your
Funding Body.
What do I do after I receive my Report?
Aim Assessments will
ensure that your Funding Body has received your report and that the
process of delivering your support is underway. You will need to
look out for any contact from either Aim Assessments or your Funding
Body to ensure that the process is working smoothly.
How do I get the equipment recommended in my report?
You
will be sent a letter from your Funding Body explaining the process
for the provision of equipment. Aim Assessments are available to
help you answer any questions related to this letter.
How do I get the training recommended in my report?
The
process for organising training can vary, but your Funding Body will
send you a letter explaining what you need to do. Aim Assessments
are happy to help answer any questions about your training and
ensure that it is arranged for you.
How do I get the non-medical helper support
recommended in my report?
You should contact the disability
team at your educational institution, as they will have a copy of
your report and will be working to set-up your support. Aim
Assessments are able to help you link up with your disability team
and answer any questions about your support.
What do I do if I want to complain?
If you have any concerns
about your assessment process, please don't hesitate to contact your
Assessment Centre Manager Matthew Timmis who will strive to correct
any issues.
Aim Assessments also have a formal complaints
procedure available
HERE. We take any complaint very
seriously, no matter how small or large, and will support you
through our complaints procedure if required.
